Nine Children

The Evangelical church at Ittlingen kept meticulous records. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints microfilmed those records, also available digitally from Archion.de.20 From those records, the shape of the household in the house near the Rathaus emerges — nine children in nineteen years.

The godparent network documented in these records was not ceremonial courtesy. It was civic infrastructure. The Ochsenwirt's family — the Schueßmanns, keepers of the Ox Inn — appear at four of the nine baptisms. The Greiner family, who held the Verwalter (administrative manager) post, appears from Maria Elisabetha in 1726 onward. By 1731, Gottfried Greiner himself — the Schultheiß, the mayor — stood at the font for Georg Wendel.

The grandfather's name. The name from Württemberg. Three generations of the family had carried it, and John Adam gave it now to the last child born in the country he was about to leave.

Less than one year later, the family sailed for Pennsylvania.
